The short and long term impacts on victims of crime.

Short Term: If it's an assault or rape you could have bruising or cuts (physical damage). When you go into the police station to id the criminal your getting re-victimized in having to explain his or her appearance. You could lose your job because of lose of sleep. You could become embarrassed about being assaulted and not tell the police or loved ones.

Long Term: A victim of crime could become paranoid, making it very hard to sleep at night or like in law and order the victim put 6 or 7 locks on the door. Victims often change their routine sometime drastically, in law and order the women started to sleep in shoes. Some victims go so far as to move homes or even cities because of the fear of being re-victimized. In the case of a sexually assault the victim could become abstinent and eventually lead to a break up.

In this news story Kelli (rape victim) explains how she was sexually assaulted after being robbed while she was sleeping right next to her husband. Kelli says " It's so frightening because my husband was in bed with me," she said. "I thought about this when we were at the RCMP station. He could have killed us. He could've killed us while we were sleeping."

A good way to lessen the impact a rape has on someone would be to not put them through an eight hour interrogation like in law and order. the victim also should not have to be swabbed down for DNA because that would be re-victimizing them.
